The Martyr geocache is a little stash of goodies somewhere within John Coleridge Patteson's parish area. To find it, you will need a GPS receiver and some clues from the following:
An Alfington bishop sailed the South Seas
To bring Good News to the islanders many
But there, did wrath and mercy meet
And he was martyred there, I'll tell 'ee.
A monument stands in memory of the man
At the place where four turnpikes meet
If one looks to the cross and the bright noonday sun
A treasure you'll find at your feet.
So store up your treasure in heaven
Though earthly treasure's not far
And walk through this quiet bit of Devon
And be careful where you park the car.
In the Court of Louvigny's twin, the young parson lived
South-east of a nearby junction
So off you go, up the road
Until you meet a grand hippocastanum
Look at the resting place well-shaded there
You'll find it serves another function
Centuries before, Russel met Piran's clansmen,
To fight in a nearby meadow.
Their conflict is marked to tell us when.
You'll need the numbers that follow
OMMA Y'N DHOL-MA, AN KLNS MYS GORTHEREN
By the bishop's chapel, you'll find the last clue,
So look around and wonder "Where is it?".
After a while you'll feel an answer is due;
You'll discover it when you exit.
So off to the cache with the greatest haste.
You'll find it tucked in a crevice.
You've travelled the area and searched for the way.
These details should help it surface.
It's not far if you do it on foot.
A bicycle's better by far.
A slow pace, looking and listening are good,
But there's no doubt that you'll get in your car..
Once the clues have been found, the numbers are entered into a formula and this will give the correct longitude and lattitude for the location of the cache. This formula is available from the official Martyr geocache page.
